Mall launches are a Southeast Asian tradition, but MG Motor Philippines chose TriNoma to move a ₱1,398,888 rear-wheel-drive electric crossover, the S5 EV, backed by SAIC Motor, and aimed at the country's growing battery-electric market. The bet is that LFP chemistry and a nationwide roadshow can crack a market still dominated by internal-combustion SUVs at the same price point.
Key takeaways
- MG priced the S5 EV at ₱1,398,888, slotting it against the BYD Atto 3 and Toyota/Mitsubishi ICE midsize SUVs.
- The 415 km NEDC range discounts to roughly 290–310 km in Metro Manila traffic and tropical heat.
- LFP chemistry is the right call for a 35°C tropical market where NMC packs degrade faster under heat.
- The Multiply Greatness Tour 2026 targets provincial capitals, not Metro Manila's small early-adopter pool.
- Philippine DC fast-charging infrastructure, not the ₱1.4M price, is the S5 EV's real structural risk.
What the S5 EV Actually Is
The S5 EV is a compact rear-wheel-drive crossover with a 49 kWh LFP battery, a 415 km NEDC range figure, and a 120 kW DC fast-charging ceiling. NEDC is the most optimistic test cycle in wide use; discount that 415 km by 25–30% for anything resembling a real commute in Metro Manila traffic and tropical heat. The number to hold in your head is closer to 290–310 km.
The launch bundle includes a 7 kW wall charger and a 3.3 kW portable unit at the ₱1,398,888 sticker. Five drive modes ship with the car, Normal, Sport, Comfort, Snow, and Custom. The Snow mode in a country that does not have snow is doing a lot of work, but it comes with the SAIC parts bin and the parts bin does not care about latitude.
The S5 EV slots above the MG4 Urban EV in the local lineup, which arrived earlier in the year as MG Philippines expanded its New Energy portfolio. This is MG's second run at the Philippine market, the brand operated there from 2015 to 2018 under Morris Garages Philippines before withdrawing, and the return under SAIC has been more deliberate. ₱1.4M Buys the Market, or Tries To
At ₱1,398,888 the S5 EV is priced against the BYD Atto 3 and the upper end of ICE midsize SUVs from Toyota and Mitsubishi that anchor Philippine family buying. That is a defensible slot, under the Atto 3 in some configurations, well above the entry compact segment, and inside the price band where a first-time EV buyer with a garage and a 7 kW charger might actually make the switch.

The Multiply Greatness Tour 2026, which opened at Trinoma and rolls out nationwide, is the real strategy signal. MG is not chasing Metro Manila early adopters, that pool is small and already spoken for by Tesla parallel imports and BYD. The tour targets provincial capitals where the ICE SUV incumbent has priced itself into the same window the S5 EV occupies. If the roadshow converts even single-digit percentages of those showroom walk-ins, the volume math works. If it doesn't, ₱1.4M compact EVs sit on lots.
The structural risk is not the price. It is the charging network. The Philippines is early-stage on public DC infrastructure, and a 120 kW ceiling is only useful if there is a 120 kW plug within range. The same competitive dynamic is unfolding across Southeast Asia as Chinese-backed brands push into markets Western OEMs treated as afterthoughts.

LFP at This Price Point Is the Right Call
LFP chemistry trades peak energy density for cycle life and thermal stability. In a tropical, high-humidity market where a car may sit at 35°C ambient for eight hours a day in a covered lot, that trade is the correct one. NMC packs run hotter and degrade faster under those conditions; LFP shrugs. The 415 km NEDC figure looks smaller than an equivalent NMC pack would show on paper, and that is the whole point.
The residual-value question at ₱1.4M is real, the Philippines does not have a mature EV resale market, and a 2026 compact crossover from a brand on its second run at the country carries genuine uncertainty on the used lot in 2030. LFP's longer cycle life is a partial answer: the battery will still be usable when the residual is being negotiated, which is not a claim every EV in this segment can make.
The 120 kW DC ceiling on a 49 kWh pack means a public fast-charge from 20 to 80% in under 30 minutes when a compatible charger exists. Whether the network can absorb a volume push is the open question the Multiply Greatness Tour cannot answer on its own. The number to watch is not the S5 EV's Q4 sales figure, it is how many new DC fast chargers come online in Luzon and Visayas provincial capitals over the next twelve months. Without that build-out, a 49 kWh LFP crossover is a very good city car with a range-anxiety problem waiting outside the metro.
