A hundred kilometres per minute is a marketing line first and a physics claim second, it lives or dies on whether a station can actually source that current.
That is a laboratory number until an independent tester confirms it in a Prairie parking lot in February. Sunwoda claims the pack will run from 20% to 97% in roughly 12 minutes at −20°C. Winter thermal management is where every fast-charging spec sheet goes to die, and Canada has a lot of Februaries.
BYD's 1,500 kW flash charging platform already delivers 400 km in five minutes, and the grid draw Sunwoda's claim implies sits in the same order of magnitude. The cell is the easy half.

The company unveiled its "All-in-One, Boundless" photovoltaic-storage-flash-charging open ecosystem platform at the 2026 New Energy Battery Industry Development Conference, targeting 10,000 megawatt charging stations by end-2027. That is an internal target, not a confirmed build pipeline. BYD's first 1,500 kW flash charger outside China went live in Germany, one unit, not ten thousand. The gap between announcement and pavement is where these programmes prove themselves.
Canadian relevance is zero in the near term. No Sunwoda OEM partnerships have been announced for EVAP-eligible vehicles, and China-built EVs are excluded from the federal rebate on country-of-origin grounds regardless of the cell inside. A Tier-Two Supplier Hitting CATL's Spec Is the Real Signal
Sunwoda is the Shenzhen-listed battery maker you probably know from a major recall of the Volvo EX30, and that is the risk OEMs price before signing a high-rate scale-up. It is the one Sunwoda-specific execution problem worth naming; the other is that the 10,000-station target requires a Chinese grid buildout the company does not control.
The market-share context sharpens the point. Sunwoda held roughly 2.5% of the Chinese EV battery market in March 2026, down from 2.8% in January. That a supplier at that scale is quoting the same nine-minute figure as CATL and BYD confirms ultra-fast charging is now the entry ticket in China, not a differentiator. The moat has moved elsewhere, to volume, to OEM trust, to whether the cell survives its warranty.
The nine-minute number matters less than whether OEMs will trust these cells at 15C in production volume. The checkpoints are the OEM partnership announcements and the 2027 station count against Sunwoda's own 10,000-unit target. Miss the second by an order of magnitude and the first will not follow.
