What Swaptopus Actually Is, and Why the Name Is the Least Interesting Part
Octopus Energy and CATL announced the joint venture at Octopus Energy's Energy Tech Summit in London, and the venture, called Swaptopus, aims to build a network of battery-swapping hubs for electric trucks across the UK and Europe. The two companies say the network could eventually support in excess of 300,000 electric trucks while unlocking £30 billion worth of private investment. First UK hubs are targeted for 2027, scaling toward 30-plus mega-hubs by 2035.
Swaptopus is easy to misread as a quirky name for another electric-truck infrastructure project, it is a newly formed joint venture between Octopus Energy and CATL, created to develop automated battery-swapping hubs for heavy trucks across Europe. That distinction matters. Octopus and CATL are bringing a battery-swapping model already used at scale in China to Europe's growing electric truck market, and two DeepWay swap-ready lorries are already in road testing in Germany. This is not a whiteboard project.
The economics of swap are not new either. The passenger-car version was normalised in China years ago, and NIO's swap network, which underpins the residual case for its cars in Europe, proved the operational side works. Heavy trucking is a different weight class, but the queue-time argument holds better here than anywhere else: a diesel tractor fuels in ten minutes, and any electric equivalent that takes ninety loses the freight contract before it wins the emissions one. The objection here is obvious, megawatt charging is coming, and if a 40-tonne truck can pull a full state-of-charge in the twenty-minute break a driver has to take anyway under EU tachograph rules, why bother with the mechanical complexity of pulling a pack out of a chassis? The answer is grid. Megawatt charging concentrates a fleet's demand into the same peak-price window; swap lets the pack charge slowly on cheap overnight power and get lifted into a truck at 08:00 without touching the grid at all. Octopus is in this deal specifically because that arbitrage is worth more than the hardware costs.

The 2027 Hub Number Is Where This Either Becomes Infrastructure or Becomes Announcement
The load-bearing problem is standardisation. One CATL pack spec has to win broad adoption across the European heavy-truck OEMs, and the OEMs have historically preferred proprietary packs. Octopus brings grid integration and demand-shaping credibility; CATL brings manufacturing scale. The gap is European OEM buy-in, and that gap is the entire risk.
NIO proved passenger-car swap works at more than 2,500 stations in China, but heavy trucking adds weight-class and duty-cycle complexity that passenger cars never faced, a long-haul pack cycles harder, degrades faster, and needs a swap cadence that maps to driver-hours regulations, not just battery chemistry. The scale argument that carried BYD past Tesla globally, build the volume first, extract the unit economics second, is the same argument Swaptopus is now making for infrastructure. It works when the fleets commit. Without committed fleet volume, the hub count stalls at whatever the JV's balance sheet can carry.
The comparison worth naming is Tesla Semi. Tesla has been shipping small volumes to PepsiCo since late 2022 on a proprietary megacharger network and is still years away from real production scale in Europe. Swaptopus is picking the opposite bet, swap the pack in minutes at a shared hub rather than build a bespoke charger network per OEM. If the shared-hub model attracts even three of the top six European truck OEMs, Tesla's proprietary approach becomes the outlier, not the default.

2027 Is The Only Number That Matters Now
Put a probability on it: 60 per cent that Swaptopus becomes a real platform, conditional on the 2027 hubs opening on time paired with fleet-operator sign-on. The specific trigger to watch: at least two UK hubs live and taking commercial swaps by December 2027, with named multi-year contracts from fleet operators running more than 500 trucks each. Miss that and the OEM standardisation conversation gets harder, not easier, because every quarter of delay gives Volvo, Daimler, and MAN more time to lock in proprietary megawatt-charging depots that make the pack-swap chassis modification look like sunk cost.
Canada is not in scope, but the model is. NIO's Canadian swap timeline of 2028–2030 shows how long the corridor math takes once you factor in siting, grid interconnect, and fleet density. Swaptopus is a better name than the infrastructure problem it is solving, which is a high bar.
