Hyundai IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Black Ink Launches at £79,320

£79,320 buys a lot of black paint. It also buys seven seats, a 110.3 kWh battery, and a spot three grand above the range-topping Kia EV9's ceiling. Hyundai has added a new high-end trim to the all-electric Ioniq 9 called Calligraphy Black Ink, positioning it as the flagship of the flagship. The differentiation is cosmetic. The price is not.

What the Black Ink Trim Actually Adds

The Black Ink sits above standard Calligraphy with a carefully curated combination of black exterior and interior design elements, retaining the equipment levels and driving character of the trim it sits above. No new powertrain, no bigger battery, no fresh range figure. Hyundai is selling a darker version of the car it already sells, blacked exterior brightwork, dark chrome delete, black Nappa leather inside, and the visual signal that the buyer paid for the top of the sheet.

The UK price is the concrete number. In North America, Hyundai unveiled the 2027 Ioniq 9 AWD Performance Calligraphy Black Ink as a new top-of-the-line trim, which Edmunds expects to land around $80,000. Two markets, same idea, different sticker shocks.

Europe gets no pan-continental launch date. The IONIQ 9 Calligraphy Black Ink will be introduced across European markets in line with regional launch schedules, with pricing and availability details announced by the respective local Hyundai organisations closer to launch. That means a national-org roll-out, priced country by country, over months, ask your dealer is the honest answer to when.

The IONIQ 5 N is still the cleaner argument for Hyundai performance money, different car, different mission, and it never pretended cosmetics were the pitch.

£79,320 Parks It in Uncomfortable Company

Prices for the Hyundai Ioniq 9 Calligraphy Black Ink start at £79,320, which is £3,525 more than Calligraphy trim and teeters on luxury SUV territory. For reference, the Audi Q7 starts at £81,665, while the range-topping Kia EV9 starts at £77,645. The Kia is built on the same platform by the same corporate parent, which sharpens the question of what an extra £1,675 in blackout trim is actually buying.

When the Ioniq 9 launched last year, it immediately became Hyundai's most expensive model, costing some £7,250 more in its base form than the Korean company's other large SUV, the plug-in hybrid Santa Fe. Black Ink extends that ceiling roughly 4.6 percent higher and drops the car within £2,345 of the entry-level Audi Q7, a genuine premium marque with three decades of established residual behaviour in the segment. That is the company £79,320 now keeps.

Hyundai has the accolades to support the pitch. German Premium Car of the Year 2026, Best Seven-Seater at the 2026 Parkers New Car Awards, Best 7-Seater Electric SUV at the 2025 TopGear.com Electric Awards, and World's Best Large SUV at the 2026 Women's Worldwide Car of the Year read strongly on a spec sheet. Awards do not underwrite residual values, though, and cosmetic-tier residuals collapse for a specific reason: the buyer pool for a blacked-out spec is narrower than the pool for standard Calligraphy, and at 24-to-36 months dealers discount the visual variant to move it against wider-appeal used inventory. The Palisade Calligraphy Night Edition tracks roughly to parity with standard Calligraphy at 24 months on the used market for exactly this reason; Ford's F-150 Black Appearance packages behave the same way. Buyers spending £79,320 should price a 10-to-15 percent residual gap against standard Calligraphy into the decision.

Canada is not on the announced list. If it arrives, it will arrive later and at a number the local org sets, later than the IONIQ 6 N is still working through for its US launch, and probably at a five-to-eight-percent Canadian premium over the UK sticker.
