BYD Denza B8 Suspension Trick Defeats Traffic Boot in Viral Clip

A BYD Denza B8 driver got a traffic boot clamped to a wheel, lowered the hydraulic suspension until the clamp cleared the ground, and drove off. The plug-in hybrid Denza B8 didn't set the sales charts on fire, but its high-tech suspension promised a smooth ride across just about any terrain, adjusting damping and ride height while independently controlling hydraulic pressure at each wheel, and one driver has figured out a whole new use for it: avoiding traffic boots.

Key takeaways

  • The B8 drops its hydraulic suspension low enough to slide a traffic boot off the wheel and drive away.
  • Denza sold roughly 125,000 units across its full lineup in China in 2024, with the B8 as a low-volume halo.
  • The 425kW/760Nm PHEV shares its underpinnings with the BYD Shark 6 and adjusts damping independently at each wheel.
  • At RMB 418,000 (~$82,000 CAD), the B8 hits before Canada's 100% tariff on Chinese EVs is added.
  • BYD's Yangwang U8 tank-turn demo outsold spec sheets; a civilian found the B8's equivalent stunt first.

Sales Missed. The Clip Did Not.

The B8 launched as Denza's halo three-row 4X4 against the Toyota LandCruiser bracket, and the Australian reviews landed where halo-product reviews usually land, impressive scale and ambition, planting a very large flag at the very top of its brand's SUV lineup. The showroom response did not match the press response. In China, Denza sold roughly 125,000 units across the full lineup in 2024; the B-series off-road sub-brand carried a disproportionate share of the marketing spend for a slice of that volume, and the B8 specifically was positioned as the margin ceiling rather than the volume floor.

So the "miss" is a halo-vehicle miss, not a Corolla miss. Fine. The counterargument writes itself: halo products are not supposed to clear inventory, they are supposed to clear perception for the cars underneath them. By that standard the launch still underperformed, the B8 did not meaningfully reposition Denza against Lexus LX or G-Class shoppers in any export market that matters, and a halo that does not halo is just an expensive line item. The viral clip is doing in a week what the launch cycle did not: it is making people look up what a Denza is.

What the B8's Suspension Actually Does

The B8 is a 5.2-metre ladder-chassis 4X4 that shares its underpinnings with the BYD Shark 6 ute, with the powertrain outputs cranked up to a higher level. The 425kW/760Nm powertrain combines a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with an e-motor on each axle and an e-CVT transmission to create an all-wheel drive system BYD/Denza calls DMO – Dual-Mode Off-Road.

The suspension is where the money went. Damping, ride height, and hydraulic pressure are adjusted independently at each wheel. The system was engineered for off-road articulation, crawling rocks, levelling the body on side slopes, lifting the chassis over obstacles. A traffic boot assumes a vehicle sits at a fixed ride geometry. The B8 has none. Drop the body far enough and the clamp loses the wheel it was gripping, the gap between brochure promise and what driver-assist and chassis features actually do is usually boring; here it is genuinely structural.

The Pitch, Not the Hardware

Competing large PHEVs don't offer per-wheel hydraulic height control. Neither does the LandCruiser. Neither does the GWM Tank 500. The B8's one genuinely differentiated hardware feature, the thing that could have been the pitch, was buried under three rows of seats, 166 litres of boot space with all three rows up, and a sticker that in China runs around RMB 418,000, which converts to roughly $82,000 CAD before any import duty or the 100% Canadian tariff floor.

BYD knows how to lead with the stunt when it wants to. The Yangwang U8 launch leaned on the tank-turn and the emergency-float demos, and both clips did more brand work than any spec sheet. The Tank 300's inclined-ramp footage sold more Tank 300s than its press release did. The B8 had an equivalent stunt sitting in its own suspension software and chose, instead, to run brochure copy about luxury off-road competence. The parking-enforcement clip is the demo the launch should have shipped with, a civilian found it before the marketing team did.

BYD has been building this parts bin out further across the Denza line, see the 1,000-hp Denza Z hypercar aimed at Canada and the Denza Z9GT spotted testing in Melbourne. The engineering bench is deep. The marketing bench, on current evidence, is still waiting for its first viral upload.

The B8's Problem Was Never the Engineering

The B8 did not fail because the hardware was wrong. It failed because the pitch was. A luxury-off-road PHEV from a brand still establishing itself in that bracket needs a reason to exist that fits on a bumper sticker, and "independent hydraulic pressure at each wheel" is not that sticker. "It defeats parking enforcement" is closer, if legally awkward.

The next large-SUV launch from BYD should borrow from its own Yangwang playbook: pick one demonstrable thing the chassis does that nothing else in the segment does, film it, and let the clip travel. The B8 proved the hardware was ready a year ago. One civilian with a parking boot and a phone just proved the marketing still is not.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Denza B8 sold in Canada right now?
No. The 100% Canadian tariff on Chinese vehicles puts the B8's ~$82,000 CAD China price well out of reach before you add import duties and dealer margins. BYD hasn't announced a Canadian launch for the B8 specifically.
Does any other large SUV have per-wheel hydraulic height control?
Not in the B8's segment. The LandCruiser, GWM Tank 500, and competing large PHEVs use air or coil suspension without independent per-wheel hydraulic pressure control. That's the B8's genuine hardware differentiator.
Was the boot escape illegal?
Almost certainly yes, removing a traffic boot without authorization is an offence in most jurisdictions regardless of how you do it. The clip is entertaining; it's not a legal strategy.
How did the B8's suspension physically clear the clamp?
The system lowers ride height by dropping hydraulic pressure at each wheel independently. Lower the body far enough and the boot's clamp, which grips at a fixed geometry, loses contact with the wheel entirely.
What does the B8 share with the BYD Shark?
The B8 rides on the same ladder-chassis underpinnings as the BYD Shark 6 ute, with the powertrain output turned up to 425kW and 760Nm via BYD's DMO dual-mode off-road all-wheel drive system.
