2026 BYD Seal

The BYD Seal is the company's clearest direct shot at the Tesla Model 3 in any market it has entered, and Canada gets a version that mirrors the Australian-spec car: Nappa leather, a 530 km claimed range on the Performance trim, and dual-motor AWD that pulls 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The Australian street price has settled near AU$58,800 driveaway; converted and overlaid with Canadian-market launch costs, the defensible Canadian band is $42K-$48K CAD for the mid-trim and $52K+ for the Performance.

The 6.1% tariff that Canada applied to Chinese-built EVs in January 2026 adds roughly $2,500-$3,500 CAD to the landed cost of a Seal at this price point. That's real money, but it's not enough to reshape where the Seal competes. The 2026 Model 3 picture shifted, though: Tesla's new $39,490 Shanghai-built RWD now undercuts the Seal on entry price, so the Seal's case moves up-range to the Performance trim, where it still undercuts a Model 3 Performance by several thousand. On rebates it's a wash — neither qualifies federally. The Seal is excluded for Chinese manufacture; the Model 3 RWD is too (also Shanghai-built), and the pricier Model 3 trims sit above the $50,000 EVAP cap. So it's a straight sticker-to-sticker comparison.

The dealer-network question matters more on a sedan than on a small hatch. Seal buyers tend to be earlier-adopters of premium-segment Chinese EV brands and live in metro markets — exactly where BYD's first 20 stores are landing. Service density in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, and Calgary is the easier sell. Service density in Edmonton, Ottawa, Quebec City, or Halifax in year one is a known unknown.
