Tesla Semi Moves Into Europe, Gets Largest Order to Date

Nine years after the reveal, a Swedish logistics firm just put 500 Tesla Semis on order, and Europe's largest commercial-vehicle show is next. From Nevada Line to Hanover Stage: What's Actually Confirmed

The production side is the part that turned this from vapourware into a truck fleets can book. Tesla rolled the first Semi off its high-volume production line at Gigafactory Nevada in April, on a dedicated 1.7-million-square-foot plant designed for 50,000 trucks a year, the piece that turned the Semi from a nine-year "coming soon" into something fleets can order. Fifty thousand units a year is a real Class 8 line, not a pilot cell.

The demand side moved the same week. Swedish freight-tech company Einride placed the largest Semi order yet at 500 trucks, though notably for its North American fleet, not Europe. That's the caveat the biggest order is a North American deployment by a European operator, not a European deployment. Einride is buying the trucks where the charging exists.

Pricing, from operators already in the queue, sits at roughly $260,000 for the Standard Range Semi and around $300,000 for the long-range trim, with range claims spanning 325 to 500 miles and Megawatt Charging as the plug standard. That's the North American picture. Europe gets its numbers in Hanover, at IAA Transportation in September, the venue where the European charging landscape is being rebuilt by law under AFIR, which is the backdrop the Semi is walking into.

The Charging Question Matters More Than the Range Spec

A 500-mile Class 8 truck is only as useful as the megawatt plug at the end of the route. European fleet operators run on total-cost-of-ownership math, and diesel incumbents, Volvo, Daimler Truck, MAN, have decades of home-field service networks Tesla does not. The regulatory tailwind is real: EU heavy-truck CO₂ rules tighten to a 45% reduction by 2030 against the 2019 baseline, and that clock runs whether Megawatt Charging System deployment keeps pace or not.

Einride's 500-unit order is a volume signal, not a pilot. Fleet buyers read order size as demand-side validation, and this one lands at the moment BYD is deploying 1,500 kW flash chargers in Germany, European heavy charging is happening; the question is who plugs into it first. Tesla's answer at IAA needs to include an MCS rollout number, not another range claim.

The one data gap in the bundle: a confirmed European MCS deployment timeline. That number is the story. Range is settled physics; charging is a construction schedule.

The Number to Watch in Hanover Is Chargers, Not Trucks

Tesla will show a Semi at IAA in September. That much is booked. The disclosure that decides whether this is a European launch or a European press tour is the count of Megawatt Charging sites Tesla commits to opening in the EU by the end of 2027, and whether they'll be Tesla-exclusive or open to the fleets, the way the Magic Dock question shaped Supercharger access in North America. Without that number, the 500-unit Einride order stays a North American story with a Swedish logo on it.
