Peugeot RCZ Returns With a 1,000-Volt Solid-State Battery

Peugeot killed the RCZ in 2015. Eleven years later it's back in Paris, running a 1,000-volt solid-state pack and claiming a 10-to-80 percent charge in ten minutes. The coupe is the credible part of this announcement. The battery is the part that decides whether any of it ships.

Key takeaways

  • Peugeot quotes 493 hp, 373-mile range, and 10-to-80 percent charge in ten minutes, all unverified by EPA or WLTP.
  • Canada has zero public 1,000-volt charging infrastructure, the minimum needed to deliver the ten-minute claim.
  • Every solid-state program announced in the last five years, Toyota, QuantumScape, Samsung SDI, has slipped at least once.
  • The production signal to watch: when Stellantis replaces 'pilot line' with a named plant, volume, and model year.
  • Sister concept Citroën 2CV targets €15,000 using existing chemistry Stellantis already builds, the RCZ Vision is the riskier bet on the same stand.

493 Horsepower, 373 Miles, 10 Minutes, The Numbers Behind The Revival

The RCZ Vision concept lands with a spec sheet calibrated to make headlines. The new Peugeot RCZ Vision Concept was unveiled at the 2026 Paris Motor Show as an EV with a solid-state battery, reviving a 2+2 sports coupe that originally ran from 2009 to 2015 on the PSA PF2 platform shared with the era's 308. Peugeot is quoting roughly 493 hp, a 373-mile range figure, and 1,000-volt technology, plus the headline charging claim of 10 to 80 percent in ten minutes.

None of those numbers carry an EPA or WLTP label attached, which is the convention for concept cars and also the reason a reader should hold them loosely. WLTP is a European standard. Canada is not Europe, in several relevant respects. A 373-mile range unmoored from any cycle is a marketing figure, not a measurement. Peugeot has every incentive to quote the kindest number its engineers can defend in a slide deck, and no incentive at all to stress-test it against a Canadian February.

The design language is more substantive. A curved 21-inch display sits above the steering controller, although Peugeot hasn't confirmed that screen size for production, but the rectangular "Hypersquare" steering wheel is coming. The double-bubble roof returns from the original car, and the RCZ Vision debuts alongside Peugeot's E-T16 rally concept as the first expression of the brand's "Feline Future" design direction.

The combination is deliberate: nostalgia badge, radical interior, moonshot battery. One of those three has to be real for this to be more than a stand prop. Peugeot is betting on the third. The industry's track record says that's the hardest bet on the floor. The chemistry sitting underneath this concept is the same technology that solid-state batteries have been promising for most of a decade, working prototypes exist, scale manufacturing does not.

Solid-State At Paris Is Still A Lab Exercise, Not A Launch Date

Peugeot has not announced a production date, a price, or a factory for the RCZ Vision. The concept is explicitly a technology demonstrator, a chassis built to carry a battery pack Stellantis has not yet confirmed it can manufacture at automotive scale.

That matters because every solid-state timeline announced in the last five years has slipped at least once. Toyota, QuantumScape, Samsung SDI, and Stellantis's own partners are all still pre-scale on cells of this energy density. The physics is settled. The yield math is not. The industry has learned to read "solid-state concept" as "we have cells that work in a lab," which is a long way from a coupe you can buy with a VIN.

An honest objection: concepts are supposed to be forward-leaning, and dismissing the RCZ Vision because it's early is a failure of imagination. Fair enough, except that Peugeot is not showing a sketch. It is quoting a specific voltage, a specific charge curve, and a specific range, which invites a specific accounting when 2028 arrives. If the production car ships with a 400-volt NMC pack and a 450-km WLTP figure, the Paris spec sheet becomes retroactive marketing. Concepts earn their credibility by what they predict, not by what they promise.

The infrastructure gap compounds the risk. A 1,000-volt pack needs 1,000-volt chargers to deliver the ten-minute claim. Canada currently has a handful of 800-volt-capable public sites and zero public 1,000-volt infrastructure. The spec is written for a charging network that doesn't exist yet on this continent, and FLO, Electrify Canada, and Petro-Canada are not rushing to install hardware for a car that may or may not reach production in 2028. The same tension plays out across chemistries: the LFP, NMC and solid-state tradeoffs are the real story of the next five years, not any single press-stand reveal.

Compare the sister reveal on the same Peugeot stand. Citroen's reborn 2CV targets a €15,000 starting price using off-the-shelf chemistry Stellantis already builds in volume. One concept uses a nostalgia badge to sell a boring, achievable battery. The other uses a nostalgia badge to sell an exciting, unproven one. The Citroen will ship. The Peugeot is a coin flip, and the coin is still in the air.

The coupe body is credible. Peugeot has built sports coupes before and the Hypersquare interior is already production-bound in other models. The battery is the variable. The gap between the two is the entire story.

The Answer Is In The Battery Yield, Not The Paris Stand

If Stellantis hits solid-state yield at automotive scale by 2028–2029, the RCZ Vision is the right car wrapped around the right pack, and a €70,000–€90,000 price band would put it in Porsche Taycan territory rather than the mass-market EV field. If the timeline slips, the base-rate outcome for every solid-state program announced to date, this concept joins a long list of beautifully photographed design exercises wearing a famous badge.

The number to watch is not anything revealed in Paris. Watch Stellantis's next battery investor day for one specific transition: the moment "pilot line" is replaced by a nameplate-volume figure attached to a named plant and a named model year. Until that sentence exists, the RCZ Vision is a very good-looking promise. BYD's progress on its own solid-state program is the comparison point that matters, a Chinese automaker shipping cells before a European one gets its concept to a dealership would reorder the entire premium-EV conversation, and would make the Paris stand look like exactly what it is: a very expensive hedge against a decision Stellantis has not yet made.

Frequently asked questions

Will the RCZ Vision actually reach Canadian dealerships?
No production date, price, or factory has been confirmed. Peugeot is calling it a technology demonstrator. The base-rate outcome for every solid-state program announced in the last five years is at least one timeline slip, so treat 2028 as aspirational until Stellantis names a plant and a model year.
Can Canadian public chargers even support a 1,000-volt pack?
Not yet. Canada has a handful of 800-volt-capable public sites and zero 1,000-volt public infrastructure. The ten-minute charge claim is physically real only when the charger matches the car, a network gap that FLO and Electrify Canada aren't rushing to close for a concept.
Are the 493 hp and 373-mile figures EPA or WLTP tested?
Neither. Peugeot hasn't attached any official cycle to these numbers. Concept-car specs are calibrated to make headlines, not withstand a Canadian February. Hold them loosely until a production version gets rated under a real standard.
What's the signal that solid-state is actually on track?
Watch Stellantis's next battery investor day. The meaningful shift is when "pilot line" gets replaced by a nameplate-volume figure tied to a named plant and model year. Everything before that sentence is still a lab exercise.
How does this compare to the Citroën 2CV reveal at the same show?
Citroën targets €15,000 using off-the-shelf chemistry Stellantis already builds in volume, boring, achievable, likely to ship. The RCZ Vision uses the same nostalgia playbook but bets on unproven chemistry. One is a product announcement; the other is a coin flip.
