2026 BYD Seagull

$24,999

2026 BYD Seagull

The BYD Seagull is the smallest, cheapest electric car in BYD's global lineup, and on Chinese soil it sells for the equivalent of $11,000 CAD. The Canadian conversation isn't whether BYD can build a $15K-$20K EV — they obviously do, every day — it's whether the Canadian regulatory, freight, and dealer-margin stack lets the Seagull arrive on Canadian roads at anything close to that number.

Canada's 6.1% tariff on Chinese-built EVs, applied January 16, 2026, adds roughly $1,000-$1,500 CAD to a Seagull's landed cost. Compared to the 100% tariff regime that preceded it, that's an order-of-magnitude reduction. But freight from Shenzhen to Vancouver, Transport Canada compliance, and dealer prep stack another $4,000-$6,000 on top. The defensible Canadian price band for the Seagull at launch is $17,000-$22,000 CAD — a number that still resets the bottom of the Canadian EV market by roughly $10,000.

The Seagull rides on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 architecture with an LFP Blade battery, claims 300+ km on the WLTP cycle, and runs the same software stack as the Atto 3 and the Dolphin. It is not a Chevy Bolt replacement at a $35K price point — it's a Nissan Versa replacement at an $18K price point, which is a different segment that currently has no electric option in Canada. The federal EVAP $5,000 rebate doesn't apply to Chinese-origin vehicles, but the Seagull undercuts every EVAP-eligible EV in Canada by such a wide margin that the rebate gap is structurally irrelevant.
