Six were built. One just sold for $42.9 million. The other five owners are doing the math right now.
CSX2300, the first Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe ever built, and Carroll Shelby's personal car, crossed the block at Gooding Christie's during Monterey Car Week and reset the ceiling for American automobiles at public auction. The pre-sale estimate was $25 million. The room went $17.9 million past it.
Key takeaways
- CSX2300, Carroll Shelby's personal Daytona Coupe, sold for $42.9M, nearly doubling the previous American car record.
- The pre-sale estimate was $25M; the room blew past it by $17.9M, resetting what comparable Ferrari GTOs are worth.
- Peter Brock designed the coupe body specifically to beat Ferrari's 250 GTO on the Mulsanne Straight, and it worked.
- Only six Daytona Coupes exist; CSX2300's sale just moved the floor price for all five remaining chassis dramatically north.
- The 1935 Duesenberg SSJ held the American auction record for eight years at $22M, CSX2300 nearly doubled it in one bid.

One Hammer Price, Three Records Shattered Simultaneously
The hammer fell at $39 million. With buyer's premium, the total came to $42,905,000. That is not a marginal record, it is a rewrite.
The previous benchmark for an American car at public auction was the 1935 Duesenberg SSJ that sold for $22 million in 2018. CSX2300 nearly doubled it. The old Shelby record, $13.75 million for CSX2000, the first Cobra, in 2016, is now a footnote. And the coupe landed fifth all-time across every nationality, in a top ten otherwise dominated by Ferrari.
The buyer stayed anonymous, which is standard at this altitude. What is not standard is the delta between the estimate and the print. Gooding Christie's is not in the habit of leaving fourteen-figure gaps on the table by accident. The estimate was set against comparable Ferrari GTO trades and the eight-year-old Duesenberg mark. The room decided both were stale.
For scale: four Ferrari GTOs sit in the ten most expensive cars ever sold at public auction, with results ranging from roughly $48 million to $51.7 million. CSX2300 now outranks three of them. An American car built to embarrass Ferrari on the track is embarrassing Ferrari on the ledger too.

Built To Beat Ferrari at Le Mans, Worth More Than Ferrari at Monterey
The Daytona Coupe was a purpose-built weapon. Peter Brock draped an aerodynamic coupe body over the Cobra roadster chassis for one reason: the roadster was too draggy to catch the Ferrari 250 GTO on the Mulsanne Straight. The coupe body added the top speed the roadster lacked, and it did the job. CSX2300 and its five siblings took the GT class at Le Mans in 1964 and won the 1965 World Sportscar Championship GT title outright, the first American constructor to do it.
Ferrari's own catalogue of design partners, Pininfarina among them, built the visual language that defined the era's grand tourers. Brock's coupe answered it with a wind tunnel and a Ford 289. Sixty-two years later, the answer is worth more than most of the questions.
The scarcity math is unforgiving. Six chassis exist. None will change hands casually. CSX2300's provenance, first of six, Shelby's personal car, cannot be replicated by the other five, but the floor under all of them just moved several zip codes north. Expect the next Daytona to trade privately, not publicly, precisely because the public number is now this loud.

CSX2300's Number Is a Ceiling for Comparable American Iron, Not an Outlier
The Duesenberg record stood eight years. This one holds longer. The American collector pipeline does not contain another chassis with comparable provenance density, the combination of race-winning history, single-digit build count, and direct Shelby ownership is a set of one. Second place is a long way back.
For a sense of scale on the other side of the collector market, the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder from Ferris Bueller's Day Off went for $10.97 million in 2008 and the market has spent seventeen years absorbing that as a serious result. CSX2300 is roughly four of them.
The anonymous buyer paid a scarcity premium that is mathematically defensible. This is not tulip mania. It is the last piece of American motorsport iconography anyone can legally purchase, and someone with a nine-figure appetite for automotive history just made sure the other five sellers know exactly what the number looks like.
